In 673AD, Etheldreda founded a mixed monastery in Ely, of which she was Abbess. If, instead, she had remained in Northumbria as Queen, Ely would probably have remained a Fenland village with nothing special to commend it. Instead it is a city famous for its 'Ship of the Fens' Norman Cathedral, with its world famous Octagon and Lantern Tower.

Ely Rotarian Stan Baker visited the Rotary Club of Axminster, when he overheard a conversation about Raft and Canoe racing on the river Ax. This gave him the idea that the Rotary Club of Ely could do the same on the river Great Ouse. So it was in July 1978 that the first Aquafest was put on for the people of Ely and has continued every year, making this year our 34th anniversary.
