Stetchworth (Population 760)
Stetchworth is situated three miles South of Newmarket and is linked closely with its neighbour Dullingham. The village is set in attractive undulating countryside, offering a unique opportunity for walkers, with the Icknield Way, the Stour Valley Path and Devil’s Dyke all passing through the village. Stetchworth, as with many villages around Newmarket, is heavily involved in the racing industry; the National Stud is within the parish boundary, as is the end of the Newmarket July course, although both lie somewhat to the North of the centre of the village itself. The village has a 13th Century Church, with monuments to Richard Lord Gorges and ancient graffiti relating to a visit by Queen Phillipa. More modern buildings of interest include those of the celebrated architect C.F.A. Voysey.
Most of the community and recreational facilities are provided at the Ellesmere Centre. This is a unique venture serving a number of parishes in the South of the district and providing not only sports facilities but also a village shop, post office and facilities for many local groups for all ages. A primary school just over the border in Dullingham serves both villages. Stetchworth has other facilities including a public house, a chapel and a day nursery.
