Floodlit Wild Swan Feed

Enjoy a magical floodlit commentated bird feed with a guide from the heated main hide at WWT Welney.  You can hear the calls of the swans as you arrive after dark. The calls are getting close as you cross the bridge to the reserve and what you find when you get to the main hide is white forms gliding around an illuminated lagoon surrounded by the inky black of night. Most of the swans have returned to the reserve to roost for the night, but the swans on the main lagoon get one last meal before tucking their bills under their feathers and counting sheep. The guide tells the story of the swans and their journeys they have made to get to the Ouse Washes for winter before going out to feed the birds. Enjoy close-up views of whooper and mute swans, as they tuck into the grain. Any ringed swans that come out onto the islands or stick their bottom up out of the water can be entered into the swan computer to find out more about them. The guide returns to the hide after the feed, where there is time to ask any questions and get a bit of help reading any leg rings.

Time: 12noon & 3.30pm daily, 6.30pm floodlit feeds weekends only. Cost: Free to members, included in admission – you will need to purchase an admission ticket, but do not need to book spaces at the actual feeds. Groups of 12 or more people, who book to visit a swan feed can get a reduced admission fee.

Top tip: We advise arriving at the centre 30 minutes prior to the swan feed you want to enjoy. Open everyday, except Christmas Eve & Christmas Day
