Windows Through Time: Ely Cathedral’s Stories in Glass
Part of the ‘Stories of Ely Cathedral’ Tour Series. Monday 9 – Saturday 14 March.
A guided stroll through time via the lenses of the medieval, Victorian and 20th century windows, where art, history and craftsmanship intertwine. The medieval glass shows sublime restraint in colour and design, whereas the Victorian period reflects the opulence of the period with its vivid colours; this together with intricate detailing, brings to life biblical themes and narratives as well as the history of the Cathedral itself. The 20th century windows show more creativity in what they depict, how they are designed and the techniques used. Many have strong links to Ely’s own histories, reflecting local history as it happened. As you look around, keep an eye out for nods to local institutions, from military to medical and commercial connections.
Throughout the tour we shall see the fascinating evolution of window glass, its symbolic meanings and the artistic techniques which have shaped these masterpieces over the centuries.
