On 12 August 2026, representatives from organisations across Ely and the surrounding area gathered beneath the impressive canopy of the Sessions House for the unveiling of a permanent plaque commemorating the visit of the Knife Angel to the city.
The plaque marks not only the Knife Angel’s time in Ely, but also the city’s continuing commitment to raising awareness of knife crime and supporting efforts to bring an end to what Cllr Rebecca Denness, Mayor of the City of Ely, described as a “scourge on our society.”
Jonathan James, Chairman of Soham Town Rangers Football Club, and Natalie Griffiths, the club’s Community Liaison Manager, who jointly led efforts to secure the Knife Angel’s visit to Ely, attended the unveiling alongside Cllr Denness; Matt Routledge, Town Crier of the City of Ely; Anna Bennett, Manager of Visit Ely; her colleague Annabel Reddick; representatives from local charities; and members of the City of Ely Council.
Following an introductory cry from the Town Crier, Jonathan James spoke about the considerable work involved in bringing the Knife Angel to Ely. He reflected on the immediate impact the installation had during its time in the city and expressed his hope that its message would continue to resonate, creating a lasting legacy long after the statue’s departure.
Cllr Denness then spoke about the profound impact the striking sculpture has had both locally and nationally. She reflected on the tragedy of knife crime becoming an all-too-familiar part of society and expressed her hope that the conversations, education and awareness inspired by the Knife Angel would help challenge that trend.
The Knife Angel remains a powerful symbol of remembrance, reflection and hope. Created from thousands of surrendered blades, it confronts the devastating consequences of knife crime while encouraging important conversations around violence, prevention and community safety.
The new plaque at Sessions House ensures that Ely’s connection with the Knife Angel, and the important message behind its visit, will continue to be remembered for years to come.
