Ely proudly honoured Britain’s service personnel last weekend as Armed Forces Day 2025 brought hundreds of residents and visitors together in a heartfelt celebration of duty, sacrifice, and community spirit. The event, delivered in partnership by Visit Ely, the Royal British Legion (RBL) Ely Branch, and the City of Ely Council, was hailed as one of the most successful yet.
From the official opening parade to the moving sunset ceremony, the day was filled with memorable moments. The proceedings were opened with a rousing cry from Ely’s Town Crier, followed by a speech from the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Rebecca Denness, who praised the bravery and resilience of the Armed Forces community. Throughout the day, families enjoyed historical military displays, live music, children’s activities, and opportunities to engage with veteran and support organisations.

A special highlight of the event was the appearance of Tony Rushmer, local author of SAS: Duty Before Glory, who delivered a fascinating talk, met with attendees and signed copies of his acclaimed book exploring the history of one of the world’s most elite military units and the prominent local connection
Here’s what Tony and the Families of Reg Seekings, his brother Bob Seekings and friend Eric Musk had to say
Tony Rushmer quoted “I would like to thank Anna Bennett who invited us to join the day and the rest of the Visit Ely team for providing the Seekings and Musk families the platform to tell the people of Ely what these young men achieved. It felt very apt – and a great privilege – to be able to talk about three remarkable men in Ely, home city to the Seekings brothers and just a few miles from where Eric Musk lived. What made the day so special was that it was strongly supported by members of the Seekings and Musk families. It was also fascinating to hear about the life and career of Major (Ret’d) Kerry Seekings MBE, who experienced so much during his career in the Parachute Regiment.”
Major (Ret’d) Kerry Seekings said: “Armed Forces Day provided the opportunity through Tony’s excellent presentation to showcase the achievements of three young men from the Fens. They are examples of the great generation that did so much when called on to do their duty.
Helen Seekings-Denham, granddaughter of Bob Seekings, said: “It was a special day for the Seekings and Musk families to hear Tony’s inspiring talk, held outside Ely Cathedral, close to where the Seekings brothers grew up, it was especially moving. My Uncle Kerry’s reflections on his time in the Paras gave real insight into his exceptional career. Overall, it was a brilliant tribute to three remarkable local men and the armed forces community.”

Anna Bennett, Event Manager, said: “Ely’s Armed Forces Day 2025 was an incredible celebration of service, unity, and community spirit. We were honoured to welcome so many people who came together to show their support for our Armed Forces. The turnout and enthusiasm exceeded all expectations, and it’s a true testament to the strength and pride of our local community.”
Dave Martin, Chair of the Ely Branch of the RBL also added:
“Once again, I am extremely proud not only to be part of the team that helped to produce a great day, but as a veteran in the City of Ely. The community support for our veterans continues to grow and is shown by the support we see at the City of Ely’s Armed Forces Day event. An event which continues to expand, and I thank the whole Visit Ely, Ely RBL and City Council team for their input. Our city’s event is still very new, and we welcome and appreciate any constructive comments to help us improve this event and deliver to our community.”

With strong attendance, despite the heat, heartfelt tributes, and enthusiastic participation, Armed Forces Day 2025 once again reaffirmed Ely’s deep respect and support for its Armed Forces past and present.
