David Evans: The Use of Published Prints for his Designs, an online talk with Canon Jeff Hopewell

Canon Jeff Hopewell explores how David Evans drew on existing artworks for his stained glass designs, a practice widely accepted in the late Georgian and early Victorian periods. More than 67 sources have been identified, ranging from celebrated masterpieces to lesser-known works spanning four centuries. The talk considers how these artworks were adapted for glass and what they reveal about Evans’ artistic methods and influences. Jeff Hopewell has long had an interest in stained glass and is a retired priest in the Church of England. He is also the Stained Glass Advisor to the Leicester Diocesan Advisory Committee. Jeff is the author of a book on the Glaswegian stained glass artist Douglas Hamilton and his next work, The Stained Glass of the Horwood Brothers: the Life and Times of a Provincial Victorian Firm, is due for publication in November. He has also written an article for the BSMGP Journal on the sources used by David Evans of Shrewsbury for his stained glass, which forms the basis for this talk. This talk will be delivered by Zoom.
