Looking forward to 2025

2025 is going to be another exciting year for Ely, and we can’t wait to share it with you all.

On May 8th, 2025, as a nation, we commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe. To commemorate VE Day 2025, Ely will join in with the National Day of Commemoration for this hugely important anniversary.  A special Cry delivered in unison with other Town Criers will start the day, followed by a wreath laying at Ely’s War Memorial, a service of thanksgiving at St Mary’s Church concluding with the lighting of the Peace Beacon.

The first bank holiday in May we celebrate our rather quirky, unique and only – Eel Festival weekend. This year we aim to increase our stalls and entertainment, embrace our eel-throwing competition (not real eels) and bring back the ‘Eel Safari’. Keep an eye out for details.

For the first time ever, the humble Apple Day that was born 25 years ago, is a whopping two-day celebration of not only the apple, but harvest in the fens. It is fair to say that the nourishment provided from the support of visitors, local community, the parish council and sponsors has allowed this sapling of an event to grow into a mighty tree, and one we are very proud of.

The entire year is on track to be one of joy and celebration and will coincide with the national celebration of the 200th anniversary of the modern Railway, an advent that influenced the development of Ely almost as much as the cultivation and husbandry of eels!

As we look towards 2025 with excitement and anticipation, we couldn’t be prouder of being able to celebrate all that Ely has to offer. From well-established to new and innovative events, such as the home and garden show at Ely Cathedral – we can’t simply think of a reason why you wouldn’t want to visit Ely this year!

Happy New Year.
